How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond

How Many Methods Are There?

There are several different kinds of training methods to choose from, I will be mentioning the five basic ones here. I will go over each, but I wont go into too much detail since there is plenty of information over the internet or in books on each one.

I did go over some of these methods a bit already in my post How To Train a Dog That Doesnt Like Food or Toys, but we will touch on them again here.

Method #1 : Clicker Training

Clicker Training is using what they call a Marker to mark the exact moment the dog did what you want. The marker promises a reward, usually a treat or a toy. They call it Clicker Training because they use a little device called a Clicker. When your dog does the right behavior, you click and reward.

Clicker Training is a fun training method to use because you learn to enjoy the process and seeing your dog learn things. Its great to see that light bulb go off in their heads and go Oh! I know what you want, Here! Clicker Training can be very effective, especially if you have a food motivated dog.

If you would like to get started or would like to read more on clicker training, check out; Clicking With Your Dog and Click for Joy!.

Method #2 : Treat Training

Treat Training is a lot like the Clicker Training method. Usually people will still mark the behavior, only they will use Good! or Yes! the second the dog does the right thing. Theres not much else to say about this method of training. Use treats to reward good behavior and things you see the dog do that you like.

Method #3 : Balanced Training

The Balanced Training method, is a mixture of using treats when the dog does the right thing, and a correction when the dog does the wrong thing. A corrective type collar is usually used, and to give a correction you give a pop or jerk of the leash.

If you choose to do this method with your dog, be sure to use a training collar and not a regular buckle collar. You will harm your dogs neck much more with a regular buckle collar than you would using what they call a Prong Collar or other type of training collar.

Your dog wont care how many times you pop the leash when wearing the regular buckle collar. Youll still have a dog that wont listen. So, use a Training Collar.

Method #4 : Praise and Correction

Praise and Correction training doesnt require using any treats at all. You can use a toy to reward if your dog is toy motivated, but mostly you just use praise and petting. When your dog does the right thing, you reward with praise, petting, a toss of a toy or a game of tug. You can do all, or just do one at a time. So praise one time, petting the next, a toss of the toy for the 3rd time they performed correctly. Mix it up to keep it interesting.

When the dog doesnt do the correct thing, you give them a correction on a Training Collar. There are many different types of training collars, though the ones Ive found to be the easiest on the dogs neck and give the best results are the Herm Springer Prong Collars.

The best program Ive found for this type of training, and is well worth your money is Don Sullivans "Secrets to Traning the Perfect Dog" (LARGE DOG) w Fun Fetch Training Ball

Method #5 : Remote Collar Training

Remote Collar Training can be an excellent method to use when used properly. A Remote Collar should never be used to hurt the dog and if used properly should not hurt the dog at all during training.

You should first find the proper level to use with the dog, most dogs work well at level 1 or 2. Both of these levels dont hurt at all. I know because Ive tried it on myself. It feels like a small tapping feeling. It doesnt shock at all. Now if you turn it up, yes it hurts! You should not have a reason to turn it up though. The only time Ive seen it needed was in schutzhund training when the dog gets so excited and high in drive that it doesnt feel anything, or during rattlesnake training to train a dog to stay away from them.

Be sure you know how to properly use the remote collar. Get a professional to help you, and watch the videos that should come with your collar.

Remote Collar training will help you get a very reliable dog off leash much faster than any of the other methods. Dogs can become collar smart though, so be sure to let them start wearing the collar days or even a week or two before you begin your training with it. Let them wear it while youre not training. Train and let them wear it, but dont use the remote and get them to listen in other ways. Mix it up. This will result in a dog that listens weather wearing the collar or not.

Or, let them wear it all the time (except at night and when unsupervised), make sure they get a break from it every day to protect their neck from getting sores. The longer they wear it and always have to listen, the better chance of re-programing their brains. So it makes things automatic where they dont think about what youve asked at all. This way, when you take the collar off, they just do it no matter what. Theyve been doing it for so long, they just know exactly what to do.

To sum this up, there are several training methods you can use with your dog, and some I didnt get to mention. Which one should you use with your dog? The one that works best for you and your dog! Some dogs do best with positive reinforcement training. Other dogs could care less since they dont like food or toys and do best with the correction based training or remote collar training. You know your dog best, use what works for both of you.

Dont let other people talk down to you or make you feel guilty for not using positive reinforcement training. There are a lot of these people out there. Its Okay not to use reward based training methods! All methods are effective, and the important part is to have a well behaved dog. A dog that you are happy with and enjoy!

Happy Training!

How kids should greet dogs

Two of my personal favorite things in life are dogs & kids.  I know that some of you may think Im nuts, but I truly adore a good relationship between these two playful creatures.  A relationship with our family dog can be one of our fondest memories as a child, I know it was mine.  But, it can also be a memory of stress, anxiety, injury, or even fatality.  I will write a post or two in the future on how to actively supervise your children with dogs, and yes, they need you to actively engage in this relationship.  But for now, lets talk about teaching your children how to greet & possibly pet a dog.  Click this post if  you want to lean tips on how adults should greet dogs.

  1. No running.  Walk up to the dogs owner & stop about 5 away & ask if you can pet their dog.  Look at the owner when you ask & wait for the answer.  Sometimes the answer is no.  Not all dogs like to be pet & some dogs even have injuries where petting hurts.
  2. If the owner says, "yes" ask what the dogs name is before petting.  Calmly say the dogs name & quietly tap your outside leg & say "hi Dexter (insert the dogs name)."  You want the dog to come up to you, dont rush up to the dog.
  3. If the dog comes up to you, gently pet under the dogs chin, chest, & side area.  If the dog moves away at anytime, do not follow him, ask him to come back for more petting.  If he doesnt come back, he no longer wishes to be pet.
  4. When you are finished petting thank the dog owner & quietly walk away (dont run).
  5. Great Job!  You made one dog very happy today for being such a gentleman or young lady.

 See how its done

Tips:
·         Dont approach any dog without an adult with them.
·         If the dog is barking, or jumping around do not approach.  Walk calmly away.
·         Dont put your face in a dogs face.
·         Dont approach a dog while he is eating, or chewing a toy.

Biting Should Stop After 15 weeks

Selasa, 08 Maret 2016

Your dog should not be have a biting or nipping problem once he reaches the age of 15 weeks or older. Many dog owners who own dogs that are older than 15 weeks still struggle with the biting issue. Many of them have went as far as placing a nuzzle on their dogs mouths to combat biting. By the time your dog reaches 15 weeks you should have already given him proper training techniques and basic commands to get your dog to stop his annoying mouthing behavior. However, if this is still presents a problem or if you have adopted a dog thats a little older than 15 weeks and is new in the home, then the following tips can help you get your dog to stop biting your hands and biting at your fingers:

1. The first item on your checklist must be to immediately discontinue playing all dog games that include roughhousing. I realize that part of the fun of having a new dog is playing games like tug-of-war and wrestling, but unfortunately, this technique doesnt work for many dogs. So, if youre faced with an animal that is still not over his biting period, you have to stop these types of activities. By playing these games, you are giving him the notion that he is allowed to roughhouse with you at any time he wants. You have to be very careful because you dont want your dog to be hostile towards strangers and young children.

2. While its okay to allow some light biting, let me stress light biting, from very young puppies, when your dog is older than 15 weeks, all forms of biting should be completely discouraged. It doesnt matter if its just a little nibble on your fingertips or hand that seems to be harmless, give your dog a firm command to stop biting that and immediately pull your arm away.

3. If need be, apply a type of "shock method" to get your dog to stop biting. Keep in mind that I am not talking about anything that is harmful to your dog. A spritz bottle of water fits the bill very well. Anything that you can quickly spray at his little body or head when he bits or nibble is enough to stop him from wanting to bite ever again. Most of the time, this method is all a pet owner will need in order to eliminate their dogs mouthing issue.

4. Lastly, use firm and disciplinary commands when it is needed. This goes for puppies of all ages. There is nothing wrong with quickly giving a loud and firm "No-Bite!" command if you feel a teeth at your hand. However, there are two things to keep in mind here: Do not scream so loud that it scares your dog, and second, dont star at your dogs eyes for a long period of time because he will take this as a confrontation.
